Being a member of the First Hagerstown Hose Company is not just about Firefighting. Our volunteers assist in Public Education both at schools and at Children's Village. We strive for professionalism at all times no matter if we are in training, testing our equipment, on parade details, or at our normal everyday jobs.  We currently have over 3 paid apparatus drivers while the rest of our firefighting force are volunteers.

WHAT IS HFD?  The Hagerstown Fire Department Office is located in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland.  Engine 1 is one of six fire stations with both volunteer and career firefighters.  The department consists of 5 Engine Companies (pumpers), 2 Aerial Ladders (trucks), 2 Reserve Pumpers, 1 Reserve Ladder Truck, 1 Utility Vehicle, 1 Mobile Emergency Response Vehicle (trailer) and several Staff and Command Vehicles.

The department is commanded by a career Fire Chief, 3 Career Battalion Chiefs and 3 Career Battalion Captains that work 3 shifts on a 24 hours basis.  Each volunteer fire station is commanded by a Volunteer Captain.

The Hagerstown Fire Department also has its own Fire Marshal's Office that conducts fire investigations and fire inspections.

Many of our volunteers run with other departments. Don't worry though!  We can still help point you in the right direction!  The First Hagerstown Hose Company not only serves the City Of Hagerstown.  Our Volunteers fall under the Washington County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association.  All City Departments along with all volunteer departments within Washington County are part of the association.  They recently launched a new recruitment tool to help people join the right department.  Not sure what you want to do this site below is for you!

Once training begins, your role as a volunteer firefighter can change depending upon how far you would like to go. The training and opportunities are endless. After you achieve a certain level, advance classes as well as free college credit classes are available.
